Asus throws caution to the wind with a 12GB lappie: Gizmodo Australia

Sure, the new 17-inch MacBook Pros stuff 8 hours of power inside. But whatevers. Asus's G71gx gaming notebook crams in 12 gigabytes of RAM. That's more RAM than most netbooks have for storage.

And, it'll have a Blu-ray option, up to 1TB of storage (via two 500GB drives), and Nvidia's latest mobile GPU, the 1GB GeForce GTX 260M, which delivers a 50 percent performance boost over last gen's 9800M series using the same amount of power, and can be configured in a SLI setup for two graphics cards.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, this is a real 17-inch notebook: A desktop in a box. You'll need a forklift to move it and it gets approximately seven minutes of battery life running off of its nano nuclear power plant, but it has everything you need inside, except a refrigerator to hold your Tooheys.

I kind of embarrassed to say that that notebook completely and utterly destroys my desktop setup I have now.

I mean, you wouldn't use it on the go, but hey, if I could replace my enormous monitor, the tower and two external hard drives I have sitting around with that tiny thing, I'd be pretty happy.

Plus, it's got Blu-Ray! Ha

Hot damn, that is one freaking sweet package! I mean, 12GB RAM? That's unheard of for a laptop. Not to mention 1TB hard drive and 1GB video card. Of course, the battery won't be any good unless they have the option of changing the performance settings, in which case you might get another 5-10 mins of battery life before it melts into a pile of sludge!

Speaking of which, the cooling system better be top notch, otherwise that will become a pile of sludge in no time!

Damn this thing blasts away a heck of a lot of desktop setups! But yeah, the three main issues I see are battery life (with that much RAM and high end graphics card in particular, you'd probably have to look at ordering an extra battery soon after buying this), cooling system (forget about leaving this beast on for several hours or all night, because that's when the bugs will fly), and price - since this is a very unique gaming desktop, how much will Asus charge for it? My guess is $6000-7000, in which case I'd rather invest in a fantastic near top of the line desktop gaming PC.
