Flying Car Completes Its First Flight, Promises to Be Totally Unaffordable

We had to rub our eyes a few times too when we saw this!

Flying Car: Gizmodo Australia

We've been promised flying cars in sci-fi for so long, we've forgotten that by god, we're owed them. This "Transition" aircraft is a pretty decent first step, but we've got a ways to go.

We've reported on the Terrafugia Transition before, but it finally completed its first flight, which means we're all closer to owning a sweet hovercraft. Terrafugia, which is Latin for "escape from land," promises that this new Transition model will achieve about four hours of air travel at 180 km/hr, and is equipped to drive on land as well, small enough even to park in a garage. Unfortunately, it'll run you about $US194,000 and require a pilot's licence to operate. Terrafugia is aiming for a 2011 release.

It's not as cool as Blade Runner's Spinners, and it doesn't time travel like the famous Delorean, but it is real. I guess that's the trade-off, right?

This is a well designed flying car. 3-5 years ago I saw a simple flying car made of a small airplane.

Its very innovative, but it'll be a long time before the average guy on the street can drive one of those. Also, the mileage could be better. Nothing like flying high and running out of fuel before your destination!
