The 50 Most Important Games Of All Time

Kotaku Australia editor David Wildgoose gives us his top 50 games of all time, and there are some surprises

Nintendo features prominently in Kotaku Australia's top 50: Kotaku Australia

The Guinness Book of World Records recently issued its list of the Top 50 games ever. Reading through it, all I could think was what a terrible list it was. So I figured I'd come up with my own.

Here are my choices for the 50 Most Important Games of All Time. My chosen criteria were how immediately significant and/or lastingly influential a particular game was to the industry at large. Please note that I've ranked them in chronological order rather than importance. So bear in mind this is not a list of the best games ever, although there are obviously many quality titles below. Are there any games I missed? Are there any you feel don't merit inclusion? What do you consider the most important games ever made?

Spacewar!
Created in 1962, Spacewar! is generally regarded as the very first video game. And it doesn't really get much more important than that.

Pong
Single-handedly responsible for kickstarting both the arcade and the home video game industries.

Zork
Although built upon the earlier but primitive Colossal Cave, Zork's extensions to the puzzles and enhancements to the parser meant it quickly exemplified the text adventure.

Space Invaders
After Pong, Space Invaders brought about the second big arcade explosion. It was the first shoot 'em up, too, so things exploded even more.

Adventure
Gave the text adventure a graphical makeover on the Atari 2600 and, with it, paved the way for every RPG and action/adventure you've played since.

I'm surprised Final Fantasy wasn't a hit earlier than 7, although 7 probably remains the most successful title in the series.

Diablo was pretty successful as well, although it was based on titles released before it so I guess it didn't establish itself as groundbreaking in any way.

I'm surprised arcade games like Time Crisis and Daytona didn't have a mention. They've been in arcades for a large number of years. And of course games like Guitar Hero and Rockband should be in for the whole new legion of devoted fans they have created.

I agree that the Guitar Hero franchise should have gotten a mention as it's bringing in thousands of casual gamers to the market.

Definitely agree with Super Mario Bros, I think we could easily say that without Mario, Nintendo wouldn't be the giant that it is today in the market.

Probably wouldn't agree with Nintendogs, just because it's not a game that everyone can pick up and enjoy easily as many others on the list are. Otherwise it's a good list

Nintendogs is surprisingly popular with the younger market. Every kid who has a DS has Nintendogs in their game collection. Not to mention Pokemon and surprisingly, brain training!

I hope series like Mario, Zelda and Final Fantasy continue in the future (should be a no brainer!), as they have always pushed the boundaries of gaming to ever greater heights! Just think about Final Fantasy 7, Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time here.

Another fighting game I was thinking of that might have been mentioned is Mortal Kombat. Its younger than Street Fighter, but still spawned a loyal fanbase, with Subzero being a mainstream character for quite a while.

But since this isn't a complete list, I'm sure that and others were mentioned but not posted in this article.

I just thought of another game which would probably be in there: Need for Speed. Not sure but it might have been the first street racing game series out there with the option of being the cops and booking people.
