Police Car of the Future: Here Now

PopSci's motoring expert (and we mean total expert formerly of one of the biggest daily newspapers in Australia) checks out what's next for Australian police cars

Australian Police car:

Australian police cars are in the process of becoming some of the most advanced in the world. And in some cases, the new equipment they’re being fitted with is worth more than twice the price of the car.

Indeed, there is so much new equipment that many police cars have two batteries to meet the extra demand on the car’s electrical system.

From satellite tracking and touch-screen computers to on-board cameras, the latest crime-fighting gadgets are designed to prevent or detect offences – and in some cases capture the bad guys.

In the near future, some Australian police agencies will have the potential to watch street riots and high-speed pursuits from a central control room via video cameras fitted to police cars.

Above all, the technology has been designed to help protect the community and improve the safety of officers on the street.

For a complete run down of exactly what new technology you can find in Australian Police cars, grab a copy of the March edition of Popular Science, out now for $8.95, and hit page 58!

Does anyone else get scared when a cop car pulls up beside them? I get the sudden urge to put both hands on the wheel, sit up straight and begin to drive about 5km under the speed limit.

That and I resist the urge to start confessing things I've done
