PopSci to test drive the Nissan GT-R

Also looking for new staff when the current mob fail to return from test drive

Today Nissan will let the eagerly awaited GT-R loose on Eastern Creek. It will be in the hands of ex-F1 driver and Nissan test driver Toshio Suzuki as well as a bunch of F1 driver wannabe journalists, including us. The classic Nissan Skyline series is one of the most popular cars for enthusiasts and modifiers, and the GT-R is set to continue Nissan’s trend of creating high-performance vehicles for car nuts.

The GT-R has already picked up a bunch of awards, including Top Gear’s Supercar of the Year award for 2007 and inclusion in Popular Science’s 100 Best Innovations of 2008. It’s also one of the fastest production cars to have lapped the famous Nurburgring Circuit in Germany, with manufacturer claims putting it faster than the Porsche GT2 along the 20.8km circuit.

Nissan claims that the GT-R can reach over 300kph and go 0-100kph with launch control enabled in under four seconds. Ironically that’s about the same time it takes PopSci staff members to wet their pants. Stay tuned tomorrow for the low down on just how many GT-Rs our talent managed to crash.

Damn that is one sweeeet ride! I'd love to get in there and be able to burn it up on the track. Nothing like cruising at over 200kph without worrying about cops, unexpected corners or people in a car that's worth several times my annual paycheck :p

Well, after having driven it we do agree, that was onne hella sweet ride. Scared the hell out of us (because we really opened it up) but totally worth the ruined underwear. Now, if you would like to donate to the "Buy a BT-R for PopSci" fund, please get in touch...

I better start saving up for one now...By the time I rack up the $170K it'll probably be 50 years later and we'll probably be flying around instead!

There was a course on offer a while ago (might still be doing it) where you can drive a WRX Rally car for around $500 in WA. Now that would be an awesome experience, although definitely a lot more face marks on the glass by the end.
