Integral Energy learns the hard way why it?s important to keep antivirus software up to date
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Integral Energy recently slotted into the latter category. The power provider is responsible for the provision of electricity to some 800,000 families and businesses, although the recent virus outbreak has apparently not caused any power outages.
The W32.Virut.CF virus managed to infect all of Integral Energy?s 1,000 desktop computers and drastic measures were required to cleanse the digital infection. The company was running Symantec antivirus software across its computers, but clearly had not updated the software recently as protection from that particular virus was released as part of a February update.
The virus managed to spread as far as the operator display computers in the power control rooms. Thankfully, some fast thinking and use of Linux-powered machines meant that no further virus damage was recorded.
