Up in the Air

It?s all happening in the skies at the moment with airlines being awarded, new flights heading in and out of the country as well as new carriers coming in

We reported a couple of days ago that the Skytrax Airline of the Year awards had been wrapped up for 2009 with Cathay Pacific the big winner. The Hong Kong based carrier surpassed Singapore Airlines, with South Korea’s Asiana Airlines in third. Qantas dropped from third to sixth. Interestingly no European or American carriers made it into the top ten. It was dominated instead by UAE and Asia-Pacific based airlines. What we didn?t mention though was some of the other award winners, so here are some notable ones.

Best low-cost airline went to Air Asia, with Jetstar and Virgin Blue coming in 4th and 5th respectively. Qantas took out best Australasia airline while Singapore Airlines won for best first class. Another notable award was for the best cabin staff, a category that was dominated by the Asian airlines, with Malaysia Airlines winning from Asiana, Thai, Singapore and Cathay.

In other aviation news, Australia is getting a whole bunch of new flights and carriers. Virgin Blue recently announced additional services to Townsville, Canberra and Hobart. It also announced the first flight of a new service for its international carrier, V Australia. Today the first Brisbane to Los Angeles flight took off.

Back in Sydney meanwhile, Kingsford Smith will soon be greeted by Qatar Airways (serving Qatar), Air Austral (serving Paris via Reunion Island) and Delta, the world?s largest carrier (serving Atlanta via Los Angeles).
