Turbulence for Qantas

The aviation industry is suffering during this economic climate and Qantas has been hit hard

For a change our national carrier isn?t in the headlines for a plane that has had mechanical issues or a staff member who is under qualified. This time they have hit the headlines because the global financial crisis has hit them. Qantas will cut up to 1750 jobs in an effort to reduce operational costs. But it doesn?t stop there.

The sixth best airline in the world (according to the Skytrax Awards, dropping from third) will also withdraw 10 aircraft from service for a limited time and will hold off purchasing addition aircraft. This include orders of the A380 and new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Qantas will be deferring purchase of four extra A380s, 12 Boeing 737-800s and will delay the launch of the Dreamliner.

The airlines has also slashed five percent of its international capacity.
