Severe weather lashes New South Wales coast

The wild weather in NSW is set to continue with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing another severe weather warning for the central coast region this morning.

Flash flooding, thunderstorms and high wind speeds are expected to thrash the east coast around Coffs Harbour this afternoon, with a low pressure trough expected to track slowly southeastwards during the day. The forecast for Sydney is similarly soggy, with the Bureau reporting another wet weekend is on the way.

The new warnings follow news that the town of Lennox Head, in northern NSW, has been declared a disaster area after a waterspout hit the town yesterday. Julie Evans, spokesperson for the NSW Bureau of Meteorology, said the waterspout was the result of an unseasonably intensive “supercell” storm. “Northern NSW is the ‘thunderstorm capital’ of NSW. But having said that it is quite unusual to get supercells in June.”

“While waterspouts are observed fairly frequently off the NSW coast, they are typically less intense and severe damage at coastal towns is rare.”
