Ryanair jets grounded after volcanic ash found in plane engines

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano continues to cause airspace chaos around Europe, with budget airline Ryanair reeling from a string of ash-related incidents.

Two of the company’s Belfast-based aircrafts were removed from service after staff found ash in their engines, Irish newspaper Belfast Telegraph reported yesterday.

The airline initially claimed separate technical faults were to blame after four flights were cancelled at Belfast City Airport on Sunday. Further testing found trace elements of ash in the plane’s engines.

The planes have been grounded with further testing set to follow.

A fifth Ryanair plane made a precautionary landing yesterday after flight attendants noticed a burning smell in the cabin. Airline staff told the BBC that chemicals used to clean the engines of ash were behind the unusual odour. That plane is now back in service.
