Red dust blankets out the sun in Sydney
The thick dust haze has reduced visibility so much that it has prompted road warnings from the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority to drive safely, as well as advice from healh authorities to stay indoors if you have respiratory issues such as asthma. Flights out of Sydney airport have also been delayed and no ferries are running - causing headaches for commuters.
The red haze has blanketed out the sun, even as of this writing at 7.15am, although the redness has settled somewhat. The dust is believed to have blown in from western New South Wales and is expected to linger for at least another few hours into the day. By that stage, the dust is expected to settle, though the Australian Bureau of Meterology has maintained an earlier warning of more gale-force winds today.
*7.30am update: pollution levels are now classed as ‘hazardous’ - children, pregnant women and the elderly have been advised to remain indoors.
