His first tweet appeared an hour ago and has already amassed him more than 100,000 followers.

Edward Snowden infamously leaked classified information about the NSA in 2013, revealing mass documents on government secrecy and surveillance. His efforts sparked new debates on information privacy and have branded him as both a hero and a traitor.

Jack Dorsey, a co-founder of Twitter, wasted no time in giving Snowden a personal welcome to the site.

Even famed astrophysicist and host Neil deGrasse Tyson joined the revelry. He welcomed Snowden, who was a recent guest on his radio program StarTalk.

Then the inevitable happened. Snowden gave Tyson the honor of his first Twitter mention as he tweeted back with a space joke of his own.

The conversation continued to the obvious subject, at least on the internet: cats.

Despite the fun and games, however, Snowden remains a subject of intense controversy around the world. After bringing the NSA secrets to Hong Kong, he fled to Russia, where he is now a temporary resident. He continues to travel as an event speaker, and works as the director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

When his Russian residency expires in two years, he will again be in a state of limbo -- but fear not, now you can always track him down on Twitter.
