In what is hope by many (not least Tesla) to be a shot in the arm of the burgeoning electric car industry, the weekend saw the first premium electric sedan released to the American market, with it due to arrive on Australian shores mid next year.

The 270 kW, 440 N-m torque motorised vehicle, when equipped with the base 40kWh engine, is rated for a range of 258 km, with the higher end option offering about 480 km ranges.

The line, launched in California in the US, is being billed as a premium electric car for the middle class, with each car going for about US$57,000.

According to Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk, the plan is to sell 20,000 a year once production ramps up.

The Australian iteration isn't due to land until mid next year, by which point we'll know just how well it's doing in the US in its ambition to single handling bring electric cars to market.
