Rumour: New iPod touch to have a front-facing camera

It’s that time of year when the lead-up to the traditional early-September new iPod announcement from Apple is heating up. This results in various theories, rumours and a liberal dash of misdirection as to what we can all expect to hear from the big Apple. There were recent rumblings that the next generation of the iPod touch would sport the iPhone 4 FaceTime feature (by way of a front-facing camera) by using email addresses instead of contacts.

Now, according to the Mac Rumors website, the rumour has gained further momentum because of some leaked photographs of the alleged innards of the new-model iPod touch. A parts supplier is claiming that the photographs (pictured) are, in fact, shots of the front LCD of the fourth generation iPod touch. Astute eyes should notice the front-side hole that would allow the integration of a front-facing camera.

Considering that currently the only Apple-endorsed (read: legitimate) way to use FaceTime on the iPhone 4 is by way of Wi-Fi connection, it’s not too much of a leap to assume that the same could be true of an upcoming Wi-Fi-capable iPod touch model. So if you were tossing up buying a new iPhone 4 just for the sake of FaceTime, you may be able to fork out a whole lot less to do so.
