Video: Sony’s 360-degree autostereoscopic 3D display makes sci-fi a reality

What would any recent sci-fi film or TV show be without some kind of 3D, most probably holographic, display? The problem with science-fiction of old was the lack of real-world computer technology the film/TV show creators had available to them in order to create believable futuristic technology. Nowadays, we not only don’t have that problem, we’re also taking steps closer to making science-fiction technology a reality.

Engadget is reporting that Sony will be demoing their 360-degree autostereoscopic (that means no need for glasses) 3D display at SIGGRAPH 2010. The new 3D technology is called RayModeler 3D and makes use of footage captured by an eight-camera configuration combined with a turntable to shoot objects at 45-degree separations in order to create the final 360-degree continuous image.

If all of that sounds a bit confusing, fear not, we’ve embedded a range of demonstration videos below to highlight how it all comes together. The first video offers a behind-the-scenes look at the RayModeler 3D, the second offers a showroom look at how it works and the third video shows a retro flashback gaming application of the technology.
