Who needs a priest in flowing robes or a middle-aged lady in twin-set to tie you and your partner together in eternal matrimony? I-Fairy, a robot designed by Japanese company Kokoro, can now do it for you – with or without the lengthy sermon.
In a world first, the perky little robot officiated over the wedding of Kokoro employee Satoko Inoue and her husband, robotics professor Tomohiro Shibata from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan. A hidden programmer was on-site to ensure I-Fairy was able to guide the lovebirds through their big day without any glitches.
I-Fairy was initially designed to be a service robot, assisting in roles such as presenter, museum guide or receptionist, but it could be some time before he is able to legally seal the deal down under – celebrants are currently required to co-sign marriage papers, which could be a problem for this dexterity-challenged bot.
