Video: Stephen Conroy continues to defend mandatory internet filtering in Australia

Stephen Conroy is the poster boy behind the push for a mandatory internet content filter in Australia. And while Google recently panned the effectiveness and validity of the proposed internet content filter, Minister Conroy continues to push for it despite a variety of key criticisms that have yet to be adequately addressed.

Because of the proposal, Australia has drawn international comparisons with countries such as China, Iran and North Korea in regards to countries that pose a threat to freedom of expression online. If you’re not up to date with the important issue or want to see what Minister Conroy’s current stance is on the subject of internet content filtering, the video below is well worth watching.

While watching this video I had a little daydream that I could be there presenting my thoughts to Mr Conroy.
I’d probably start with saying how difficult I find it being in such a close proximity to him - a man who doesn’t understand the impact such a filter would have on the ideals that the world wide web has been built around. The whole point of the web 2.0 movement is the sharing of ideas, free speech and creativity; the introduction of a censor to the Internet is the first step in stripping this fantastic custom back down to a ‘read-only’ WWW. If the filter is introduced, the black list will simply grow and grow and grow and will eventually change the way we use the Internet.
I am strongly opposed to the censor and I believe Senator Conroy either doesn’t understand how much of an issue this is, or is simply playing it down for the wider television audience.
