The First Proposed Complete Double Decker Airlines Was?

Not the Airbus A380! That distinction went to the now defunct McDonnell Douglas company

It?s trivia time at Popular Science: Did you know that Airbus didn?t plan the first complete double decker airline? Sure, Boeing beat everyone to the punch with the 747 that first flew commercially in 1970, but only a small section of it was two storeys. In 1992, when McDonnell Douglas published computer images of the double decker MD12, Airbus was still tinkering with the layout of the A380.

Slightly smaller than the A380, the MD12 would be the final fling for the struggling company. Although there was strong initial interest, most in the aviation industry knew that McDonnell Douglas didn?t have the money or resources to see it through. The MD12 never made it off the planning page.
