Cellular Towers: Flood Detectors? Kubina/Flickr

Water surges remain dangerously unpredictable because we lack tools to accurately measure rainfall intensity and moisture levels near flood zones. Now Israeli scientists have created an ingenious system that uses cellphone towers to predict more than an hour in advance when and where floods are likely to strike. The trick is measuring fluctuations in radio and microwave signals around cell towers caused by moisture in the atmosphere. Next they will apply the work to snowfall and hail.
