Bristol Uniforms’s new lightweight firefighting suit, designed for the U.K. Fire and Rescue Service, provides unprecedented protection against heat, flames and toxic fluids, without the bulk and discomfort of conventional suits. The inner liner is made of a breathable, waterproof Gore-Tex-like material bonded to non-woven Nomex, a lightweight, relative of Kevlar that guards against heat and flames.

Bristol’s design also uses Velcro and zippers, rather than metal clasps. As a result, the suit weighs less than seven pounds, nearly 30 percent lighter than most fire suits worn in the U.S.
