Sydney iPhone Speed Test

A face-off between Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Three, with one clear winner

Sydney has been the site of much attention this week, particularly on Wednesday, when it kicked off proceedings for the east coast of Australia apocalyptic-esque dust storm. Freakish acts of nature aside, today the results of a Sydney-based test of the various mobile phone networks that offer iPhone data connectivity have been posted.

The curious minds over at The ByteBlog, recently conducted a test to see which mobile phone network had the best data speeds on the 3G Network. They used four iPhone 3GS handsets, with one assigned to each mobile phone network (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Three). Just shy of 150 tests were conducted all over Sydney and only when the testers could access full coverage bars for all phone networks.

The results aren?t terribly surprising, with the most expensive option ? Telstra ? decimating the other three networks, with speeds that weigh in at almost double. Three delivered the slowest rates, with its best result (2290) coming in under Telstra?s average result (2681). Ping is terrible across all networks though, and Optus experienced almost 10% failure during the testing phase. For a full breakdown of the test findings, head over to the site where you can download a spreadsheet detailing their hard work.
