How Broke Would You Have to Be to Revert Back to Dial-Up?

Are people really starting to revert back to dial-up internet to save money?

Dial-Up Internet Access:

Estimated Death: Isn’t it Dead Already?

Is it really possible that I still see NetZero ads almost every day? In this day of Web 2.0 frippery and bandwidth-intensive multimedia downloading, are that many people really still dialing up? Honestly? Either way it’s beyond belief that it can continue much longer. Time to put ‘Ol Yeller down.

In an effort to cut costs wherever possible, some consumers are going back to the cheaper, crappier-in-every-way dial-up we all cast aside years ago. This recession has just gotten serious.

Sales of the often sub-$US10 dial-up subscriptions have increased after the stock market crash and many report that they've switched from broadband, though NetZero CEO Mark Goldston was quick to note that "this is not the iPod crowd we're talking about." Chances are if you're reading this, you're more likely to try to pawn your oven than give up broadband, but where exactly does it fall on your list of priorities?

Would you give up a cable TV or Xbox Live subscription first? Let us know exactly how poor you'd have to be to go back to dial-up in the comments.

Giving up broadband would be the second last thing I would do, with the last being food of course! There are so many other ways to save money though, like taking public transport and walking more. And internet can save on other bills like phone and postage since its quick and easy to keep in touch with people anywhere.

Agreed, a quick search on Whirlpool tells me I could get 5g downloads, shaped so no excess fees, at 256kbps, for $30 a month if you don't mind a long contract and a 'lower' reputation ISP. Trade your V6 for a small 4 cylinder car and you'll save that much a month. Get a VOIP account (or even better, see if you can get a naked DSL plan) and you almost entirely wipe out your phone bill.

But go back to dial up??? That would be desperate.

There are just so many other ways to save money. And when you think about it, going back to dial up internet will only save you around $50 a month (or $12.50/week). But the extra waiting time, and more importantly the dial up costs associated with connecting to the net will rack up a pretty large bill if you aren't careful.

The whole reason we switched to broadband was because we had to keep connecting to the net so frequently that the call costs almost added up to a monthly payment for broadband!
