There’s a fine line between something that can be considered an innovative application of technology and something that’s just plain weird. We in the Pop Sci office are divided over whether the Cat@Log is completely creepy or kind of cool.
The Cat@Log (cat-a-log), devised by Sony Computer Science Laboratories in conjunction with the University of Tokyo, is a tiny tracking device that can be fitted around your cat’s neck. It uses an embedded accelerometer, GPS, video and even cat facial recognition software to send information to a Twitter account, meaning no matter whether kitty’s looking out the window, having a scratch or – wait for it – yawning, you’ll be the first to know.

Some pretty neat work has gone into this device, but it’s hard to see the Cat@Log really taking off. For one thing, cats are pretty independent creatures that may not appreciate human-kitty stalking. They might not have cat police, but they can still pee all over your shoes.
