A Driverless Lane Could Be Coming to a Highway Near You

Carpool lanes are for cars with multiple passengers, but a new lane type might make room for cars with no drivers, starting with a highway from Vancouver to Seattle. That's the new idea from several tech giants, including a board member of Amazon and a former Microsoft executive.

The lane would initially be a shared HOV one, but eventually would be moved to driverless only.

Of course driverless cars are designed to interact safely with normal traffic, but a special lane would technically mean safer, and far more efficient travel, for anyone with autonomous controls. The chief benefit of this would be saving money by dodging another public transportation initiative: high speed rails.
