If you're thinking a fitness tracker is going to help you lose weight, research says the tracker may actually impede your total potential for weight loss, assuming you're committed to making the changes already.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that people who did not use fitness trackers lost on average 5 more pounds over 12 months than those who used one.

Of course fitness trackers predominantly look at the exercise part of the weight loss equation, not the diet. The results seem to suggest that the streamlining of information makes people treat goals like excuses to celebrate, and it's posited that negative feelings when a goal isn't met can also deter dieters.

At the end of the day both groups did lose weight though, so if your fitness tracker is working for you, don't quit on our account.
