After a flight time of 71 hours and 8 minutes, Solar Impulse 2, piloted by Bertrand Piccard, became the first solar powered airplane to successfully cross the Atlantic Ocean. The plane took off from New York and landed in Seville, Spain.

The battery problems on Solar Impulse 2 aren't going away anytime soon. The batteries, damaged by overheating, won't be repaired in time for the Solar Impulse team to continue on its round-the-world mission back to Abu Dhabi, where they took to the skies in April.

Solar Impulse, the solar-powered plane currently flying across the US, left Texas today on the third leg of its cross-country voyage. But it'll have to run an audible when it touches down in St. Louis after midnight tonight: the hangar reserved for the aircraft was battered by storms in the area, and the plane will land with a special inflatable hangar instead.
