Drones //

To fight drones, a state-owned Russian defense firm is developing an anti-drone “microwave gun,” according to Russian state-owned news site Sputnik. The gun will have a range of just over six miles and fire in 360 degrees. It won't destroy drones, but it will disable the “radio electronics” of drones and precision warheads, if it works as promised. It certainly sounds clever. But it might be solving a problem that doesn't really exist.

Space makes for strange relationships. With NASA's Space Shuttle shuttered since 2011, American astronauts have hitched rides to the International Space Station inside Russian Soyuz rockets for the past four years. But ever since Russia claimed Crimea and supported a separatist movement in Ukraine, the United States and Russia haven't exactly been on great terms. Congress passed punitive sanctions on Russia, and in retaliation, Russia forbade the sale of rocket engines to the American military.

Russia is not an easy neighbor for a country to have. In 2008 they invaded parts of nearby Georgia, protecting splinter republics that exist to this day. Last year, shortly after the Winter Olympics and a protest movement in Ukraine that drove out a Russian-aligned president, Russia seized the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine, and continues to funnel arms and fighters to separatists in Eastern Ukraine as they fight against the Ukrainian government. So it's perhaps no surprise that in little Estonia, which borders Russia on the east, a company named Terramil is making simple-to-install modular underground bomb shelters.

For a country looking to show off its military might, Russia is suffering from an embarrassing bit of projectile dysfunction. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of victory over Germany in WWII, Russia is preparing for a massive military parade in Red Square. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, and it will showcase Russia's brand-new Armata tank. There's just one little hitch: On a rehearsal for the parade, one of the tanks stalled.

It's official: Progress 59 isn't going to make it to the International Space Station. Instead it's going to burn up in our atmosphere in a hopefully spectacular display of why keeping your antennae properly maintained is so important.

China and Russia, as part of closer strategic ties, have finalized a long-awaited deal for very long range S-400 surface to air missile (SAM) system. The deal is not only the largest Sino-Russian arms deal in over a decade, but S-400 missile defense capabilities would provide China with a quick missile defense upgrade at the moment neighboring states like North Korea acquire more ballistic missiles, and the U.S. and Japan look to buy stealthy anti-ship missiles.

When Russia got two competing designs for an attack helicopter, the country did something very unusual from a U.S. Department of Defense perspective: It adopted one right away. It then sent the other one back with refined requirements, creating two similar but specialized vehicles. The second of these designs, Russia's brand-new Ka-52 attack helicopters, are set to enter service soon.
