Huntsville, Alabama is a lot closer to space than most places on the planet. Not, like, literally--the elevation is just 200 metres above sea level--but culturally and metaphorically. During the space race, Huntsville tested and developed many rockets for the Apollo program. Home to the Marshall Spaceflight Center, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center museum, and IMAX, Huntsville wanted to share the joy of space in a way only a town full of rocket nerds could: with a full-size fan-built Millennium Falcon.
How does a hobbyist make their drone stand out from the sea of identical quadcopters? Dress it up like it's got stolen goods inside and the Galactic Empire is on it's tail, of course! Drone enthusiast Olivier C outfitted his custom quadcopter with a homemade body to make it look like the Millennium Falcon.
Star Wars is a visual experience, to be sure, filled with glowing lightsabers, strange aliens, and amazing outer space dogfights. But none of that would make quite so much of an impact if it weren't for the sound. Ben Burtt is the man responsible for creating much of the franchise's iconic audio and effects -- everything from the snap-hiss of a lightsaber to the sound of the Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive failing.
