Think the Sydney/Melbourne commute is bad? This week, the US Department of Transportation released Beyond Traffic, a report the agency describes as a 'draft framework' for the future of transportation in the United States. And as it stands, our future looks pretty bleak.

If the state of Iowa has its way, however, you may soon be able to produce your smartphone when you're asked for your driver's license.

Vehicle-to-vehicle technology is about to get its first major real-world test in the US. The Department of Transportation awarded US$14.9 million to the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute last month, and the university is already moving forward with a plan to put 3,000 short-range radio equipped cars on the road in Ann Arbor over the next couple of years.
