Yesterday we ran this story and sought comment from Motorola. They have replied quickly and have revealed that there are no official plans to use Android on the Aura phone.
PopSci.com.au has learned from a reliable source that Motorola’s new luxury phone, the Aura, will apparently use Google’s Android operating system. This would make it one of the first phones in Australia to be equipped with Android. PopSci.com.au was at the global launch of the Aura in London last month where it was announced the phone would be using Symbian. There was no mention at all of any intentions to use Android, and being that this is Motorola’s luxury phone (read an RRP of possibly around the $3,000 mark), it’s a bit of a surprise that they would think about using the free OS on it.
Android is a highly customisable OS and it would seem likely that Motorola would be adding a whole heap of its own touches to the system before putting it on the Aura phone. Why the possible sudden switch, and whether this will delay the launch of the Aura in Australia, has yet to be confirmed.
PopSci will be trying to contact Motorola to further confirm the OS switch and find out the reason why. Stay tuned.
