Before this week's Mobile World Congress 2015 (MWC) in Barcelona, Samsung had its back against the wall. The company reported slumping sales of its flagship smartphone , and many believed its dominance in the smartphone world was coming to an end. But after Samsung's latest smartphone release it's clear that there are plenty of innovative ideas coming from the company.

The way we pay for things is changing. Apple's made great strides since introducing its Apple Pay system last fall, and so it's no surprise that Samsung wants a piece of that action. The Korean giant has snapped up a small firm called LoopPay, which aims to replace every card in your wallet with your phone--all without requiring merchants to change their hardware at all.

We're surrounded by eavesdroppers these days--and I don't mean the NSA tapping phones. Our electronic gadgets and gizmos increasingly try to cater to our every whim, including those expressed by voice. It makes sense: Talking is a natural way for people to communicate. A big downside is that electronics have far more indelible memories than people do--and those memories can easily be, and often are, shared far beyond their intended targets.

There’s a smartphone in most of our pockets these days, containing our email, text messages, and so on—all of which could provide a wealth of information to police investigating a crime. But, in addition to the matter of self-incrimination, access to our smartphones could also open up to law enforcement a lot of sensitive and personal information that may be completely unrelated to the investigation at hand.

Apple will take its latest step toward the conquest of car dashboards at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show this week. The tech giant will unveil CarPlay, a new way to integrate an iPhone into the infotainment systems of certain new cars. The system was known in development as iOS in the Car, and demonstrates Apple's interest in the automotive market.

Here's another addition to the internet of things: London-based design firm Berg has created Cloudwash, a prototype cloud-connected laundry machine with a minimalist, customizable user interface that connects to a smartphone.

As great as Google Maps is, if you need to be directed to somewherereallyspecific - as in, aspecific room in a specificbuilding on a specific street - it stumbles. Not too long ago, we predicted that crowdsourcing would bring mapping indoors, and go figure, Google is leading the charge: the tech giant has unveiled a prototype smartphone that uses sensors to constantly map the world around it, giving everyone (customers and Google) more detailed maps.
