Sub-$US2000 Tata Nano is Officially The World's Cheapest Car

Forget $14,990 drive away. In India there is the new car bargain of all time!

Tata Nano: Gizmodo Australia

India's Tata Nano has been in the works for some time, but pre-orders are starting today with a MSRP of 100,000 rupees (under $US2000)—officially making it the cheapest car in the world.

The price jumps up to around $US2400 when you factor in the additional costs associated with excise fees, transportation, taxes, etc—but the allure of a car that ridiculously cheap is going to be powerful not only in India, but around the world. That's why the Tata group has plans for releasing a version for the European market in 2011 and North American market beyond that (although those versions will undoubtedly be more expensive).

Of course, you get what you pay for, and $US2000 isn't going to buy you even basic luxuries like air-conditioning—but it will get you over 21 km per litre. The question of reliability is also an issue, but it couldn't be worse than that gas guzzling beater you are driving around right now could it?

Looks like those nano cars I see driving around occasionally on the streets in Aus. The mileage is great, can live without the air-con for the most part, but the only thing that concerns me is the space...or lack of it. It would have been better peddling this car as a 2 door instead of 4. I can imagine people getting in and suffering from claustrophobia!

I wonder what the engine capacity is? Because the last thing anyone wants is a car that can't make it uphill when over a certain weight! But considering they put in enough room for 4 very small people, I guess it has decent drive.
