New battle: Commodore v Hilux.

Australia’s 30-year-old Commodore versus Falcon rivalry has been replaced by a new battle. The Holden Commodore is now duking it out in the new-car sales race with … the Toyota Hilux utility.

While the Commodore is still on track to become Australia’s biggest selling car for the 15th year in a row, the Hilux has landed a few punches over the past two years. The Hilux has won the monthly sales race on five individual months since April 2008 – with the most recent in April 2010. In the first four months of the year, the Commodore and Hilux were separated by just 900 sales, although the Commodore surged ahead slightly in May, outselling the Hilux to stretch the gap to 1,100 sales.

Meanwhile, the latest sales figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries clearly show our changing taste in cars. The Mazda3 small car is the third best-seller so far this year, ahead of the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30 hatchbacks. The poor old Ford Falcon has been bumped back to sixth place on the leaderboard. Until a few years ago, the Falcon nameplate had never been outside the top two sales positions.
