New Polaroid Two merges old school cool with instant fun

It’s a testament to good design that the trusty Polaroid camera has remained a hot commodity even as digital fever has been busy blasting most other film-based gadgets to camera heaven over the last decade.

Fans of the instant photo camera made an audible fuss when plans were announced to phase out the admittedly clunky older model in 2008, but the company has now announced a newer, sleeker model set to hit shelves this month.

The Polaroid Two camera has also stepped up the image quality, with 5mp images printing out instantly – think of all those outrageous party photos you could take without fearing they’ll go straight to Facebook. The older, square photographic paper has been given the heave-ho, and new zero-ink printing technology means that grainy, faded look might be a thing of the past.

The big downside here is the cost of film, which at $6.95 for a pack of 10 or $19.95 for 30, is a touch on the steep side. For Polaroid lovers, expensive film is nothing new and might be a small price to pay for the return of this retro icon.
