New Zealand Flights to Become Domestic?

Trans-Tasman flights could be getting a whole lost easier soon

Canadians can hop in and out of America pretty much as though they were walking through their own country. Citizens of European Union countries can do much the same across Europe too. So why is it that Australians and New Zealanders have to go through customs and immigration when they hop across the Tasman to what surely is the sister country?

That question has been posed by a lot of high ups lately, including politicians and trans-Tasman airlines. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that after two years of discussions, it looks like trials will be put into place shortly that will make travelling from Australia to New Zealand and vice versa almost as easy as travelling domestically.

The system that looks likely to be set up will require passengers to be cleared at their point of origin, usually a quick formality, which will then allow them to enter the country they are visiting as a domestic traveller. Not only will this save passengers significant amounts of time, it is set to cut airfares as well.

The Herald reports that Air New Zealand, JetStar, Pacific Blue and Qantas all believe trans-Tasman airfares could be cut by up to 30 percent if the trial becomes a full-blown reality.
