Heathrow to Debut Futuristic Travel Pods

Heathrow, the UK?s main international airport and one of the busiest in the world, has copped a fair bit of slack over the past few years. The slightly disastrous Terminal 5 was the latest mistake. But the introduction of energy efficient travel pods, called ULTra Personal Rapid Transport, to shuttle passengers directly to their gate, could be just the shot in the arm the airport needs.

The ULTra pods are battery powered and capable of transporting four adults and two children inclusive of luggage. They will be used along a four-kilometer track and can travel up to 40 kph. It?s reported that the trip will use 70 per cent less energy than a car would to cover the same distance.

The system will cost $52 million and trials should be up and running within weeks. Initial trials will run to and from Terminal 5 with a fleet of 18 cars. It is expected that passengers will have to wait no longer than a minute for a pod to arrive, at which point they just key in their flight number and will be taken directly to their gate.
