Popular Science has listed the most innovative new inventions of the past year that could change our lives for the better. They include:
• An exo-skeleton that enables paraplegics to walk: Created by Israeli engineer Amit Goffer, the ReWalk is operated with a simple wristband control and can walk, sit, and navigate up and down a flight of stairs.
• Use the Internet anywhere: Inspired by the Tom Cruise film, Minority Report, a small projector lets users browse the Internet anywhere with simple finger movements.
• The fastest tank: A V8-powered tank that tops out at over 100km/h on any terrain and jumps 15 metres without breaking a step.
• Fuel-efficient shock absorbers: A pair of university students has created shock absorbers that, once fitted, can feed energy back to a car’s alternator, which ultimately saves fuel.
• High rise escape harness: Inspired by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, an inventor has created a harness that allows users to safely scale down the side of a building
• Green styrofoam: Why insulate when you can ‘greensulate’? A new type of biodegradable insulation has been fashioned from mushroom fibres, and its inventors have got their sights set on plastics and other materials.
• Greased lightning: Restaurants can power themselves using their own leftover cooking oil.
